Evidence conservatives are really just misguided liberals

As I mentioned yesterday, I think many, and perhaps most conservatives are really just liberals that have become blinded due to fear and anger coming from the right.   Yesterday I had an interesting exchange on foxnews.com that lends some support to that theory.

For those of you who are unaware, foxnews.com’s conservative commenters are notorious for their often far-right, sometimes racist comments.  So when a story came up yesterday involving a riot in London, apparently arising from a police shooting, it was little surprise that a commenter blamed Britain’s “socialism”.  My first reaction was to scoff at how silly this opinion seemed – the poor rioting because they get too much support from the government?  Because they have cheap, government-provided healthcare?  It seemed like the absurd, knee-jerk reaction that we have come to expect from tea partiers.

So I asked a question, mostly for entertainment value: “why is socialism to blame?”  Surprisingly enough, I got some polite, explanatory responses.  They were also a bit surprising.  First, “Stashmaster” commented:

Because it denies those low on the “totem pole” any way to advance.  They must stay as wards of the state at all costs under socialism.

Similarly, “1peevedbob” commented:

Because it is based on a “class system”  the haves will always have and the have nots will always have not.

By its nature the opportunity to improve yourself is not there……….

Attacking the class system?  Blaming lack of opportunity for advancement for the poor?  These don’t sound like conservatives!  The comments sound like Rage Against the Machine lyrics.

Can it be, then, that conservatives do not actually believe in inequality or worship the rich, that they actually do care what happens to the poor – but simply have become so fearful and distrustful of liberals that they think we are the greedy ones?  That we are out to help ourselves at the poor’s expense?
